Moving into a booming industry

For many young Australians, finding the right career option and the education pathway to get there can be an endless maze. For Teigan Manigan, the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) Cadetship Program was an opportunity to start her exciting career pathway in the booming transport and logistics industry.

The VTA Cadetship Program is delivered in partnership with Victoria University Polytechnic. This unique blended learning program matches motivated candidates with VTA transport companies, with candidates receiving a Certificate IV in Logistics on satisfactory completion of the course.

The program’s unique offering allowed Teigan to work full-time at Secon Freight Logistics and gain an industry standard qualification. Teigan’s drive and commitment to the program successfully landed her a job with Secon upon completion of her cadetship and she couldn’t be happier.

“I've worked at Secon now for two years. When I was offered the position, it made me feel like I was a big contributor to the company and that they didn't want to lose me. I felt like family... The cadetship prepares you to work full time as you get on the job training and you can implement what you learn in the classroom in the workforce.”

During her training, Teigan was amazed at the opportunities that the logistics industry has to offer and the breadth of skills she developed during the cadetship.

“Honestly, I had no idea what the logistics industry was going to be about. The logistics industry is forever evolving and it's fast paced. No two days are ever the same, and you never know what you're going to get… The skills I developed in the cadetship include good communication, customer service skills, time management and applying technology.”

Peter Anderson, Chief Executive Officer, Victorian Transport Association said how proud the VTA are to provide this type of cadetship for new employees into the industry.

“This program actually provides on the job training in a blended learning environment to allow the student to be able to not only just understand the theory, but also in the environment of an employee situation. Employees and employers get to work through the program together.”
