Apply for a TAFE course

How To Apply for a VU Polytechnic course

Understand the process of applying and enrolling at Victoria University Polytechnic in five easy steps. Learn about what documentation you need to gather and how you can prepare to start your dream course at VU Polytechnic.

There are five steps to apply and enrol in a course at VU Polytechnic if you are an Australian citizen, hold an Australian permanent visa, or are a New Zealand citizen.

Some VU Polytechnic courses take applications through VTAC, while others are direct application only. This will be noted under the admissions info on the VU Polytechnic course page for your course. Here's what you need to know if you're applying through VTAC.

If you are an international student, the process is slightly different. Please submit your application through our international course enquiries and application system.

Before you start your application, you’ll need to decide on your course! With our wide range of industry-relevant courses and nationally-accredited qualifications, you’ll be sure to find the right course to achieve your goals and take you to the next step in your career.

Application process

Step 1: Prepare your documents

You will need to get a few things ready to submit along with your application.

Course-specific documents

Check for any course-specific requirements (these will be listed on your course page). Some courses may also ask for additional information as part of the application. These could include:

  •  attending an interview
  •  submitting a folio
  •  a current and satisfactory Police Record Check.

You must complete any extra requirements that are outlined on the course page (by the closing dates), so that we can consider your application.

If you are applying for a course that has an eLearning component, you will need to check the software requirements. Having these systems and software installed will ensure you have the best possible experience accessing our eLearning environment.

Identity documents

All courses require you to verify your identity and proof of citizenship or residency.

Your proof of ID can be a:

  • Australian or New Zealand birth certificate (not an extract)
  • Australian or New Zealand passport
  • green Medicare card
  • certificate of Australian citizenship.

Documents for sponsored students

If you are a sponsored student and a third party is paying your fees for you (a sponsor), you must provide a completed and signed external sponsor agreement form.

Other personal documents

In addition to your proof of ID and citizenship or residency other required personal documents may include:

  • your Unique Student Identifier (USI) number
apply for a USI if you are a first-time student of tertiary education or training in Australia
    - retrieve your USI if you have forgotten it
  • a valid concession card (if you are a Skills First Funded Place for a Certificate I–IV course)
  • any relevant referral forms (if applicable)
  • copies of prior qualifications and other evidence, if you are seeking Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or credit transfer from previous study.

If you need more information, please discuss this with your teacher at the pre-training review.

Concession card

If you hold a valid concession card you may be eligible for reduced tuition fees and Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). Concessions are not available for material fees.

Concessions are available to students who:

  • are studying a Certificate IV or lower level course
  • are eligible to receive government subsidised funding
  • have a valid card.

You need to provide a certified copy of both sides of your valid concession card before the start of your course. If you do not, your SSAF and tuition fees will be charged at the higher Skills First Funded rate (if eligible). Send the certified copies of both sides of your concession card via email through AskVU, or upload to your application.

More information on concessions is available on the course fees page.

Skills First–funded place eligibility

The Skills First Program is a government fund that makes vocational education and training more accessible to people who don't hold a post-secondary qualification, or who want to gain a higher level qualification than they already hold.

If you are eligible, the government will contribute funds toward the cost of your training. You can check if you are eligible for a Skills First Funded Place at the Victorian Skills Gateway.

VU Polytechnic will assess your eligibility for a Skills First Funded Place at enrolment.

VET student loan eligibility

VET Student Loans assist eligible students in selected courses at diploma level or higher to pay all or part of their tuition fees through a loan. This means you can study now and pay your tuition fees later.

If you are eligible for assistance, the Australian Government pays the amount of the loan directly to Victoria University and records a debt against your Tax File Number with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Read more about VET Student Loans on the Study Assist website.

Step 2: Complete the online application

Once you have your documents prepared, you're ready to complete the online application.

Go to the VU Polytechnic course webpage and click Apply. You'll be directed to the online application portal where you will register your details, and create a login.

The online application will take you through the required steps. You can save the application and come back to it later.

You'll be asked questions about your educational background, goals and academic skill levels, and any requirements specific to your course (as part of the pre-training review).

As part of the online application process, you will receive an email where you can click through to the greenID online verification website and enter the details from your identity documents.

If you need help with your application, please call 1300 82 33 87, or ask a question at GoToVU.

With all of this complete, you can submit your application.

Step 3: Complete the Language, Literacy & Numeracy assessment (LLN)

After you submit your online application, you will receive an email with a link to complete the Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment (LLN).

The LLN forms part of the admission criteria and helps VU Polytechnic identify the level of support you may need. Make sure you are in a quiet space free from interruptions, and take your time. You must complete the LLN for VU Polytechnic to assess your application.

Step 4: Teacher contacts you

Once you have completed the application and Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment, a teacher will contact you within 10 to 15 business days to help you finalise your application.

The VU Polytechnic teacher will be in touch to ask any questions needed to finalise your application. On the call, Zoom or in-person meeting, they'll give you a verbal indication of whether the course is suitable for you. And if not, suggest a more suitable course or include additional support.

TAFE course applications are assessed on:

  • the course entry requirements
  • your academic suitability
  • your educational history
  • your work or other experience
  • your career or study goals.

Step 5: Accept your offer

You will receive an email with an offer. This will include a fee statement, timetabling information, and any other relevant information for your course and a link to accept your offer. Secure your place in the course by clicking on the ‘Accept your offer’ link.

If you are using a computer or tablet to accept your offer, click on the ‘Accept’ button at the top right of the screen. If you are using a mobile phone, click on the arrow icon at the top right of your screen to reveal the ‘Accept’ button. We will then send you your timetable, any other course specific information about enrolment, and your course start date.

Accepting your offer means that you will be enrolled in the course and ready to start your studies.
