Lunch Day

Victoria University celebrates our frontline workers through its 'Thank You' initiative.

VU Polytechnic commercial cookery students prepared over 400 free meals for staff at vaccination hubs across Melbourne's west.

I guess today is about trying to acknowledge that we say thank you to our Western Health partners for what they've been doing and also to let them know that Victoria University supports them all the way.

My fellow students and I have been busy preparing lunches. They include veggie and chicken wraps, brownies, mandarins and salads. Everything has been packaged in a COVID safe way, practicing the skills we've learned this year.

I just really want to say thank you. Plus it's a really good opportunity for me to practice my skills from what I have learned from remote online studies.

Our teams here have been doing long hours, plenty of overtime and often found their diet has been consisting of sneaky takeaway on the way home. So having some really nice fresh  food not only reminds people that people at VU are thinking of us, but also fuels our team for the rest of the day.

The VU Thank You initiative also supplied free coffee for workers and provided access to university health & wellbeing programs.

VU students have been employed as frontline workers throughout the pandemic.

Dianne Semmens

So we have fifty VU paramedic students and many, many nurses who have been employed as vaccinators and we've got students from the Polytechnic and Higher Education health disciplines who've undertaken some of those critical frontline roles that you would have seen.

My name is Alyssa and I'm a student nurse. I'm currently studying at Victoria University. I am pleased to be part of an amazing team who administered over 1 million vaccinations through Western Health.

Our evolving partnership with Western Health it's aimed at optimising our  deep joint experience in health, research and education to benefit communities in  the West of Melbourne. So we're taking some of that expertise and partnership and trying to apply it now to help our communities during COVID 19.
