Morteza Malekshani - from EAL to nursing

Morteza Malekshani

My name is Morteza I came to Australia in 2011 with my wife and my little son. Back then I was thinking when I arrived in Australia I need to study first English and then whatever I want so I enrolled in VU Polytechnic and I started English first and then Diploma of Nursing and then Bachelor of Nursing all together in Vu Polytechnic. And I'm happy now.

I started my ESL which is called now EAL at Vu Polytechnic and I finished it there and then after that one of the teacher which was really, really supportive of me and she said because you want to go to nursing it's better to study Gateway because it's a pathway from ESL or EAL to the nursing side. They introduced me to the Gateway course so I studied six months for that and then after six months I went to the Diploma of Nursing and then Bachelor of Nursing. I was going to school five days a week. It was a bit hard for me with my little one, but the good thing all the teachers and staff were really, really supportive. They understand everything about my condition and situation and they advise me to get as quick as you can because I wanted to give up because I it was really, really hard for me but they gave me many opportunity to continue.

E-learning was really, really good because for me as a second language I could learn most terminology and you know the other medical terms and even the anatomy and physiology. Their homework was really, really designed for someone who came from the other language and going to move to the English language and was brilliant program for me. It was really, really helpful. Always because in VU  Polytechnic we had lots of other courses as well so during my EAL or ESL when I was doing that the other teachers know which I'm gonna go to the nursing so during this course they introduced me to some other teachers from the nursing course and I had lots of you know conversation with that and what should I do after finishing this course, what should I do how can I get the placement, which hospital is better.

At the moment I'm a registered nurse so I'm working in one of the actually in fifth largest hospital Private Hospital in the world which is called Ramsey House. And I'm working in Mitcham Private Hospital which is part of Ramsey Hall which is very, very you know good feeling at the moment.

What I enjoyed most about the VU Polytechnic is with most stuff that teachers are really, really supportive. They really understand our condition, situation. They're very knowledgeable and they show you where you can go and they show you all the pathway and the quick way, and the best way they can show you.
