Victoria Polytechnic early childhood and education support students experienced the differences in early learning curriculum on a recent two week study tour to Vietnam.
The group of 20 students participated in practical placements at early childhood centres, special needs schools and kindergartens in the city of Hanoi. Immersed in a new learning environment, the students engaged with local students and educators to expand their understanding of Vietnam’s education practices and culture.
The Centre for Health, Sport and Community Services Manager, Priscilla Fowler, was one of five staff accompanying the students.
She said the tour opened the students’ minds and would strengthen their skills in cultural sensitivity and work-readiness.
“Students are exposed to practices that are not part of the curriculum we have in Australia and given the opportunity to teach Vietnamese Educators Australian practices.”
Student Heather Hampton said the tour had been a once in a lifetime opportunity, providing valuable insight into the Vietnamese lifestyle and beliefs.
This study tour will help me in the future to support and build relationships with families from Vietnam and other countries where English is not their first language.”
“I was amazed to see how they develop children's discipline and values from a young age,” fellow student Kaushi Alokabandara said.
The tour is included in the workplace learning component of select courses, giving students credit toward their placement.
The group also enjoyed a visit to famous Ha Long Bay and a traditional pottery village.
