VU & Victoria Police celebrate success of Diversity Recruitment Program

15 May 2023

Victoria Police recently celebrated the success of its Diversity Recruitment Program as 20 graduates from 17 different nationalities completed the 15-week program and were deemed ready to apply for the Victoria Police training program.

The graduates were handed their awards by Acting Superintendent Charmaine Hosking in the presence of Victoria Police program mentors, Victoria University trainers, distinguished guests (Superintendent Charmaine Hosking from Victoria Police and Dianne Semmens, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Vocational Education at VU) and the families of the graduates.

The Victoria Police Diversity Recruitment Program aims to increase the representation of people from under-represented cultural communities in the Victoria Police recruitment process. The program is designed to address the challenges encountered by people from under-represented communities who apply to join Victoria Police and provides support to applicants. The program is delivered by Jesuit Social Services, Victoria Police, and Victoria University with support from Africause, MatchWorks, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, and AMES Australia.

The graduates of the program come from diverse cultural backgrounds, including First Nations Peoples of Australia, Maori or Pasifika, and applicants of Middle Eastern, East Asian, South Asian, South American, and African heritage. The program's success can be seen in the growing number of graduates who are now entering the Victoria Police training program.

According to the Jesuits website, the Diversity Recruitment Program has been successful in increasing the representation of under-represented communities in the Victoria Police recruitment process. The program has paved the way for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds to join the Victoria Police force and make a positive contribution to the community.

In addition to celebrating the success of the Diversity Recruitment Program, Victoria Police is also celebrating its 30th student graduation on May 22. The graduation ceremony will mark the culmination of months of hard work and training as students are welcomed into the Victoria Police force.

As the program continues to expand and reach more communities, it is hoped that the representation of under-represented communities in the Victoria Police force will continue to increase.
