Trading chemistry for computers

19 September 2017

Foti Mougos turned his lifelong love for computers, and strong curiosity around information systems, into a career in the IT industry.

“Three years into my Science/Education double degree I realised I didn’t want to pursue chemistry anymore, and took on some computer science subjects instead. I really enjoyed these subjects but couldn’t see myself working in the industry.

After talking to friends, family and career advisors, I decided to study the Diploma of IT: Networking, at VPoly. The idea was that I wouldn’t be stepping into another four-year degree, as the course is only twelve months long, and I would gain valuable industry experience. I then completed the Advanced Diploma of Network Security where I got to translate my skills and knowledge to intricate service and project management classes.

Our teachers gave fantastic advice on how to make the most of career opportunities. We were taken to conferences and summits where we made corporate contacts and began to understand how to maintain these relationships. TAFE gave me knowledge, but also prepared me mentally for working in the industry.

Halfway through my Advanced Diploma I was offered a position at Fusion Power Systems – a company I had reached out to as a junior network technician. I worked there two days a week while fitting my study in around the job. At the end of my course, I was employed full-time. I love my job – I’ve learnt some invaluable lessons. But I’ve always wanted to continue studying, so I may pursue a Bachelor in Network Security in the future.”
