Student spotlight - Daniella El-Fahkri

12 April 2019

Daniella is currently training for a Certificate II in Furniture Making at Sunshine campus, which she has been enabled to pursue through Free TAFE.

Holding an undergraduate degree in business, Daniella has spent some time working and travelling, but yearned to change her career and discover something completely different.

This desire for change led to her signing up to VU Polytechnic’s pre-apprenticeship course in furniture making.

“I love the idea how we can create our own products which tests our creativity and skills. Plus, the teaching facilities are amazing in Sunshine.”

Daniella says she definitely wants to continue this pathway. “It started as a huge experiment, but I’m really happy I did it. I’d like to explore furniture making a little bit more and find a mentor that would guide me.”

Speaking on her experience as a woman entering the trades industry, Daniella reflected that she feels supported by the people around her.

“To be honest, I don’t feel the inequality. I don’t feel the need to question on why I shouldn’t do this course. No one’s favouring anyone over their gender. Everyone is absolutely amazing. I’m surrounded by lovely people - there’s no childish or disrespectful behaviour.”

The trades industries are some of the largest sectors for employment in Australia and are fast growing. When you train at VU Polytechnic, you will learn in our multi-million dollar trades facilities at our Sunshine campus. This state-of-the-art training facility boasts high-tech labs and dynamic workshops with the latest machinery and technologies.
