Since completing her studies at VU Polytechnic, Rebecca Gauci has secured full time employment at a highly reputable hair salon, and started her own freelance bridal business.
“I’ve always been creative, but in year 9 I realised I had a serious love for anything to do with makeup and hair, and so from then on I tried to learn as much as possible so that I could pursue a career in both industries. In 2015, I enrolled in a dual qualification at VU Polytechnic - Diploma of Specialist Makeup Services and Certificate III in Hairdressing.
As part of my studies, I completed over 150 hours of industry placement! My placements allowed me to gain work experience as well as build up my resume so I could apply for jobs when I graduated. My teachers put me in touch with some incredible people – and because of this, I was given the opportunity to work with true industry professionals.
Recently, I secured a full time position as a Junior Hairstylist at a well-known curly hair salon. This position has been an amazing learning experience, plus the flexibility of the job has also allowed me to continue building my freelance bridal business. I’m thankful for my TAFE qualification as it equipped me with the skills to work in a fast paced salon environment and manage my own business.
If you enjoy visual and hands-on learning, then TAFE is the way to go. The teachers all work in industry so they can give you extra tips, tricks and learning opportunities, and they’re very willing to take extra time out to answer any questions. Studying at TAFE opened up many career doors for me.
My next goal is to complete further training in the bridal industry to build up my business and to travel to America to advance my skills in cutting curly hair.”
