Remote learning in 2020: Celeste (hairdressing student)

01 May 2020

Meet Celeste Speziale, professional make-up artist and Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416) student. Celeste tells us about her experience in the shift to supported remote learning at VU Polytechnic.

Describe your experience with supported remote learning at VU Polytechnic.

I have honestly really enjoyed this style of learning. What I like most about remote learning is how every resource is readily available for us to refer to. It is like having demos all day long whenever I want. As well as that, our teachers are available to ensure we are heading in the right direction in what we are watching or doing.

Can you tell us more about online and other resources available to hairdressing students?

Pivot Point Lab is next level! I am finding it easy to navigate which is really important in this style of learning, along with the revised cluster guides.

I also like how our teacher has grouped us with students who are all in the same skill stage. It makes the Zoom calls easy to follow without too many people in the session at one time and I find myself learning off the other students who are up to stage 6 (men’s).

The two scheduled Zoom meetings per day is great to check in with us and ensure we are working on our tasks. I cannot believe how well the on-screen learning for an industry that is so hands-on is being conducted. You have given us structure which is much needed in this environment, and you have opened up various pathways of communicating with you.

Would you like to give your teacher a shout out?

On a more personal level, thank you to our teacher Antonelle Lindrea for taking so much time and care in ensuring your students are getting the most out of this style of learning. Your passion is refreshing.

Top tips for online learning?

I do think it is important to have a good space to work in while learning online, which I am very fortunate in having at home and which no doubt makes a difference to the whole experience.
