Meet Tanya Thomas, Hospitality Trainer & Training Restaurant Coordinator at VU Polytechnic. We sat down with Tanya to get her insights on the vast opportunities in this booming industry and what it takes to succeed.
What do you enjoy most about teaching/working in hospitality?
I have always really enjoyed seeing people have a great time with family and friends, and enjoying good food and drinks together. I have had the opportunity to work in some great places in Australia and overseas. The varied experience has been so beneficial to my professional experience, and imparting that knowledge to my students. I really enjoy seeing my students develop their skills over time and to become more confident. It is so great to see them thriving in industry too.
How does VU Polytechnic prepare students for work?
At VU we really try and prepare our students by giving them a range of opportunities here on-campus and out in industry. We have great facilities to train our students and a growing customer base that enjoy our restaurant and special events. Our students can learn and practice the skills required out in industry so that they can enter the workforce better prepared.
What are the most important skills needed to work in hospitality?
First, it’s important that you like to be around people, other than that, it’s really about your willingness to develop your skills and experience a range of hospitality environments. There is always something new to learn.
What are your top tips for those wanting to study and work in hospitality?
There is so much opportunity out there. If you want to do well and progress in your career, now is the time to do it. Use your hospitality skills to travel and see different places. Work with other people who are also passionate about the industry and learn from them.
