Pamela's journey studying aged care and disability

16 May 2022

In 2020, Pamela was seeking the opportunity to reskill and find a way to make a difference to the lives of others. Seeking options in aged care and disability programs, she chose VU Polytechnic’s Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) CHC33015.

She chose VU Polytechnic because it offered a reskilling program and she felt confident and reassured that the course was structured to meet her needs. As Pamela said: “The teachers were especially knowledgeable and there was great teaching facilities at the Footscray Nicholson campus.”

“It was a great achievement to complete this course and get a Certificate III. I enjoyed all the experiences the course provided.  Initially it was all new to me but with help from teachers and students I got through.”

Her peers set up a WhatsApp group to share information and communicate regularly and freely about any questions or thoughts.

A significant outcome of the course was Pamela’s placement at St Vincent’s Aged Care in Werribee:

“I felt like l belonged at this facility. I also had the opportunity to work primarily in the Medical Care Unit. I was extremely keen and willing to do anything to demonstrate my ability to learn and maintain a positive attitude. My mentor Naomi said she was going to recommend me to the Facility Manager for a position.”

Four days later, Debbie, the Head of Leisure and Wellness asked her if I would be interested in joining their team. “I was very happy to say the least!“

Pamela says, “I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of my life throughout this journey.

My aim at this point in my life is to strive to bring happiness into people’s lives, especially the elderly.”
