The initiative of writer and teacher Michelle Fincke, Nicholson Street Now was the final project for Victoria Polytechnic Professional Writing and Editing Diploma's Advanced Non-fiction students.
The class walked up and down Footscray’s Nicholson Street Mall scouting out interesting characters to interview. They managed the activity like a freelance writer would – writing to a brief, sourcing quotes and taking photographs.
It was the first time Fincke had attempted this type of project with her students, but was able to do it because of her students’ commitment to the project and developing their research, interviewing and writing skills.
“It's brought journalism theory and practice together, adding the pride-and-terror combo of real publishing to the mix. It's been challenging, but good fun,” she said.
Much like Footscray itself, the blog features interviews with people from all walks of life – including Lachlan Carter, co-founder of 100 Storey Building centre for young writers; and Joan Lynn, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre volunteer of 15 years who wears a ‘Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children’ badge.
“Having a real conversation is almost a luxury these days, and telling someone's story can be a real privilege. Nicholson Street Now has helped us get to know the neighbours and feel more connected to the ever-changing story of Footscray”, said Fincke.
