Member for Footscray, Katie Hall, visited VU Polytechnic’s Footscray Nicholson campus today to talk with students completing their Certificate III in Individual Support and Certificate IV in Ageing Support under the government’s Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative. Ms Hall was joined by the Candidate for Fraser, Daniel Mulino.
Ms Hall and Mr Mulino were met on campus by Deputy Vice President, Vocational Education, Dianne Semmens, and Executive Director Engagement & Government Relations, Rob Brown. They they were then taken to meet students attending a practical class focused on personal care.
Speaking to the whole class, Ms Hall chatted with students about their backgrounds and how Free TAFE is helping them to move into a growth industry. For Individual Support student Elaine Doloughan, Free TAFE is helping her to make a career change after leaving a legal career in property settlement. A mum with three kids, Elaine found herself needing to change jobs after her role in settlement was moved to an online platform.
“It’s a growing industry, so you’re going to get work. Free TAFE has made this change accessible to me.”
As a busy mum, location is everything for Elaine. Being able to attend a local provider in Melbourne’s west that delivers flexible, quality training is crucial to her success.
“It’s perfect here because it’s close to my home. The online training is good, you can work around your commitments and do it when it suits. The practical classes once a week help to consolidate your what you have learnt from the e-learning. It’s very relevant.”
