Joe Ayoub: pursuing his passion for hairdressing

08 April 2020

Joe Ayoub grew up in Aleppo, Syria. He first learnt about hairdressing from his mother, who taught Joe skills he could take anywhere in the world. After a terrible tragedy, Joe lost his mother in the war and fled to Lebanon where he worked as a hairdresser and applied for a visa to Australia.

"My beautiful mother was a hairdresser and had her own salon. She taught me how to wash clients’ hair and how to blow dry so I could help her in the salon. This is where my passion for hairdressing began."

Joe was almost not admitted to the Certificate II in Salon Assistant (SHB20216) course as his literacy and numeracy skills were below the course entry requirements. On interview, Joe displayed his passion for the hairdressing craft and began the course in April 2019 on a two-week trial period to assess how he would cope with assessment requirements and communication with clients.

Joe was always the first to arrive in the classroom and the last to leave. His commitment, passion and energy for hairdressing contributed to his stand-out performance as a student and he is regularly commended on his ability to overcome any communication challenges.

Following the two week trial, Joe commenced the Certificate II in Salon Assistant (SHB20216) course at Victoria University Polytechnic in April and was awarded the HBIA award for Certificate II in Salon Assistant in November 2019. He is now training for the Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416).

Joe is excited to expand on his current skill set and hopes to run his own salon with his brother in the future.

Certificate II in Salon Assistant (SHB20216) is a Free TAFE course.
