Free TAFE in Salon Assistant: a starting point to a career in hairdressing

11 June 2020

Meet Bethany Rose, who has recently completed her training in Certificate II in Salon Assistant. Bethany shares why she has chosen to start her hairdressing training at VU Polytechnic.

“I wasn’t suited to mainstream education and I saw this course as a good option in alternative learning. I discovered VU Polytechnic from my hairdresser, who had also studied hairdressing at VU.

The best thing about my student experience was the positive relationships I formed with my teachers, and friendships with my classmates. My teachers have been so supportive throughout the course, especially with COVID-19.

I knew hairdressing was the right career path for me when I served my first customer at the campus salon, providing a hair wash and blow dry service. I quickly realised that I can build a natural rapport with people. I found that it was easy for me to be able to talk to clients. I can say that I have developed my self-confidence during my training.

I’m excited for the future as I have been offered an apprenticeship role at a new salon to be opened, by someone who happens to be a VU Polytechnic hairdressing graduate!

Aside from hairdressing, I also enjoy other creative outlets, such as painting still life and abstract.  I look forward to encouraging other people to continue to express themselves in a creative way.”

The Certificate II in Salon Assistant (SHB20216) is a Free TAFE course.
