A career in supporting others in their health journey

Rebecca McClure is currently completing her training in the Diploma of Health coaching at VU Polytechnic. Rebecca chose to study health coaching to be able to support people struggling with weight, health and overall wellness.

Why study Diploma of Health Coaching?

“I noticed that there were people in the community who were not qualified to coach others. They were giving out information that they picked up from the internet, making them think they were experts in health. I did not want to be part of that group. There is a gap in our health system where people are not supported fully to achieve optimal health.

“I knew Victoria University Polytechnic is reputable and a diploma qualification from VU is valid. VU Polytechnic was the only TAFE in Victoria that offered this specific course.”

Expert, industry-connected educators

“This course teaches me so many things about health, movement and nutrition. Topics include how to coach individuals so they become fully aware of their options. I also love that the learning is all online and I can be home with my kids especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sharon Curtain is an outstanding teacher/trainer. She is a dietician and health coach so she is well connected in the industry. Sharon has guided me so well and helped me realise that there is more to health coaching than what I have gathered.

“I love my weekly webinars with the other students and my trainer. The one-on-one help is amazing because you get the teacher’s full attention and receive help in areas where you don’t understand. Sharon takes time to explain concepts and we leave the online class feeling confident.”

Course highlights

“There are so many course highlights! The one that stands out is the health questionnaire. I enjoyed it very much because this is what I want to be doing and I want to get it right. Collecting someone’s information is very important. You need to know how to ask the right questions and how to be an active listener.”

“One of the first topic was creating your dream team. I am proud to say that I have made some industry connections and I hope to make more by the time I leave VU.”

Future-focused

“I want to start my own business in health coaching, and able to help and support people struggling with weight, health and overall wellness. I want to become an excellent health coach.”
