The main focus of this course is to get students prepared for the types of skills they'll need when they go into a Higher Education course. We're going to give them the skills to present orally, you know, in terms of oral communication, 'cause that'll be a key part. One of the things we know about our Higher Ed courses is that there is a lot of presentation and group work done, skills like our collaborative learning, teamwork.

I chose VU because they opened up a lot of doors for me. So they sort of started off by giving me a bit more of a chance. I didn't finish high school and I basically walked into VU, and they took me on and they helped me to keep moving forward to work towards my goals.

I chose Victoria University because I knew it caters to a lot of different learning styles. And you don't just do knowledge, you get practical experience. And that's something that is very valuable to me. I'm a very hands-on learner. This is my pathway. This is the way I can get in to doing what I wanna do.

Another real benefit of this course is a unit the students will do right at the beginning. It's about researching their study options. And in that unit, they get an opportunity to think about what they might want to do next. And so with a teacher there all the time, they can be guided and assisted through that process, even to the point where we kind of talk to them about what documentation they might need, because that's often an important part of that process.

While I was working through the Certificate in Tertiary Preparation, I started working with one of my teachers to get a few tips on writing a really good application letter. So I wrote an application letter for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science, and I ended up getting accepted. So I'm just about to finish my bachelor's degree and hopefully I'll be moving forward to undertake my honours and hopefully start working towards a PhD. My advice for students considering going into Higher Education would be to, don't be afraid of it. And these courses are here for you guys to push you, to actually enable you to apply for Higher Ed. They'll teach you how to succeed. They'll teach you how to do the work, how to prepare yourself, and how to be a really good student.
